How do you take the stress out of renovating?

We have all heard from the couple that tackled a renovation and how it was one of the most stressful times of their lives. It is often time when your communication skills are really tested as a couple. While the process of renovating should be fun, enjoyable and enlightening experience, it will really test the friendship. It can be very trying with living conditions compromised and challenging to be put in a small living space with no running water.

When I work with couples, those that navigate the renovation well do five key things.

    1. Set a budget. Having an agreed budget makes decisions easier.
    2. A key decision maker. Choosing who gets the last say so that decisions can be made and not changed is really important. Even dividing up the decision making but ultimately having one person to get the okay from is key. You are one team but you need a leader.
    3. Being Flexible. Knowing that things don’t always go to plan and being flexible enough to handle each issue as it arises and work out a solution.
    4. Have someone other than your partner to talk to. Renovating is stressful and so your friends are a good resource to vent frustrations and give some perspective.
    5. Have a good plan. When you work with an architect you get expert advice about planning your design and renovation. They can help select builders, interior designers and landscapers. They can also provide some perspective about what works and what doesn’t, saving arguments and time.
